I have a good friend who is so good about making stuff for my kids (two Christmases ago it was a “boredom box” filled with activities to do with my kids over the winter), so this year, inspired by Pinterest, I decided to make her three boys a fort kit.  I found a couple of tutorials at meg + andy and saltwater kids, and of course waited until the last minute to get all my materials and make it. ;)   I did this as a Christmas present, but it would be a great birthday present too.

In the tutorials, the bloggers got twin sheets, which is a great idea since they’re already hemmed, but since I was short on time, and making a kit for three boys, I was afraid I was going to spend hours scouring thrift stores for non-floral sheets.  So I went to my local fabric store, Hip Stitch, and they had some great boyish fabric on clearance (not to mention that Suzanne is so incredibly helpful – she helped me brainstorm how much fabric and how best to make it work.  If you want to learn to sew, I really recommend a local sewing lounge!).  I got two yards for the fort itself, plus another 1/2 yard for the bag, and Suzanne cut off a strip to use for ties.

I cut the strips into eight pieces sewed them together to make ties.  I learned a handy little tip while quilting, that if you aren’t worried about backstitching, you can just keep sewing all the ties together and then just snip them apart when you’re done.  It saves starting and ending with each tie.

If you don’t use sheets, like me, you’ll have to hem the four sides of the sheets together, which was ok since I stuck a tie in to each corner anyway.  When all four sides are hemmed and the ties are sewn in (I did a zigzag stitch on the ties to make them more sturdy), it’s time to make the bag.  I just eyeballed how big the bag would need to be with the fabric and goodies inside (suction hooks, clothespins, clamps, rope and a flashlight) and then cut the material around it (leaving a generous amount on all sides), and used ribbon to make a drawstring (I used the tutorial from skip to my lou for the drawstring bag).

The last thing was to make the tag.  I used the tag from saltwater kids and modified it a little with my contents.

And there you have it!  A fun present that encourages imagination!  My husband told me I need to make one for our kids too. ;)   I seem to do all my sewing late at night when the kids are asleep, so excuse how dark the first couple of photos are.

my note: I think we all do a lot of ‘working on things’ late at night when the kids are asleep huh! :)

Thank you again, Ellen! I can’t wait to make one for our crew!

The Modern Advent Calendar

November 29th, 2011

I’m recycling a post from last year that still generates a lot of buzz. Hopefully in enough time for you to brainstorm your own version (especially if you have a house-full of boys like my friend here). PS – she welcomed her second son only a short 11 weeks ago. It’s amazing what a year [...]

PS – she welcomed her second son only a short 11 weeks ago. It’s amazing what a year can bring. We are truly blessed. Merry Christmas, Amii!

Amii is one of my good friends & fellow comrade (a partner in crime in both the mommy & photographer world), so showing this off to you today provides an extra bit of giddiness for me. From the moment I saw it, I loved it! Thank you so much for sharing, Amii! For the rest of you … enjoy ~ you guys are in for such a treat!

Amii W's living room before MachC Photography: She's Crafty! series

The yellow room is the BEFORE picture of what it looked like before we decided to go modern and sleek.  That room is very typical/traditional for all the other homes in our neighborhood which is completely not our style.  We love the urban/downtown loft feel and while we love to live in the suburbs (down the street from my parents!), we still wanted that trendy modern feel for the inside of our home.

All carpets were pulled up to reveal the concrete slab and we just had it sanded/finished.  The walls were painted a navy color and a white leather couch replaced the basic mustard yellow couches.  Ceiling fan was taken out and replaced with recessed lighting and while the fireplace is still not what we want, it works in the space for now.  We recently replaced the mirror above the mantel with a large flat-screen tv where I can display my favorite photos through Apple TV.  LOVE that!

For Christmas, I wanted to do an Advent calendar for my 6 year old but I knew that I wanted it to be homemade but modern looking at the same time so I found the idea for the simple tree advent calendar on a family site (Advent Calendar instructions can be found here).  I used thick cardstock in various shades of green, used double-sided tape to make the trees and then used a 1″ circle die-cut to make the circles with the numbers.  My son is in love with Legos right now so I bought a Lego Advent calendar set and took out the individual poly-bagged figures to hide inside my trees.

The advent is the FIRST thing my son does in the morning!  He loves getting to open up a treat each day before school and seeing how many days are left until Christmas.  I think we have found our newest tradition!  Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas, Amii! Thanks for sharing your creative talents – love the final look!

Fun Things To Do With Your Photos

November 11th, 2011

I’ve known Jen for a while now. In fact, a long while. Long enough I’m not even sure how long (several years at least, right? Or is my memory failing me that miserably? lol). She is truly one of those kind, compassionate, fun & fun-loving people that you just want to be around. Can’t help [...]

I’ve known Jen for a while now. In fact, a long while. Long enough I’m not even sure how long (several years at least, right? Or is my memory failing me that miserably? lol). She is truly one of those kind, compassionate, fun & fun-loving people that you just want to be around. Can’t help but be around … and smile. If you were one of the ones who dropped off a meal to us in those wee-baby early days, you have Jen to thank for that. She set that up. (I know, see – I am better just for knowing her, I swear.) She constantly amazes me with all she does for her family, for her home, for her business, for her life. I think you’ll get a taste of that here … take it away Jen!

*********************************************************************************
Hello! I’m so excited to be sharing a little project here on Chelsey’s blog! (Isn’t she wonderful?!!) As a photographer, I’m always looking out for different ways to display my photos. This just happens to be one of my favorite ways. :) Its great for gifts (think the upcoming holidays!), to hang on your wall, or to put on a little easel on a desk. For this project, I had a piece of wood. I got this at a local craft store here in Salt Lake City. (And sadly, they don’t ship any of their cute projects) However, you could probably find something similar to this at a craft store near you. You could even use a regular ‘ol piece of wood! (And if you know someone with a woodshop and router… well they could help you out with a fancy shmancy edge.)
So here’s what you need…
* a board
* a photo (mine was printed as a 12×12… the size you print your photo will be dependent on your board size)
* mod podge
* foam craft brush
* something to get the bubbles out when you lay the photo on the wood. (i used a pampered chef pizza stone scraper thingy… but your library card would work just fine too!)
* acrylic paint
First: I started out by painting the outer edges black. I knew the outer edges would be visible, so I picked a color that would go well with my photo. Let it dry…
Next… spread the mod podge on the board. I just dumped it straight on the board. Saved me a step. I like that. ;)
Then… you will slap that photo on. And work the bubbles out… (enter: library card!) Start from the center out.
Last… Now this step can be a bit intimidating… but trust me. :) Get some mod podge on your brush. Dont be shy. And don’t skimp. Get a good bit of mod podge on that brush! I started at the top of my photo and did horizontal strokes across. The great part of this last step is that it gives your photo a tad bit of texture AND seals it so it won’t peel off your wood.
And you are done! Yay! :)

Thanks, Jen! I love how it turned out! And that texture is gorgeous!!!
What projects are you guys working on out there? What fun things have you done with your photos lately?
